LCD Failures

Hardware failure – LCD, inverter, cable or backlight

Symptoms:

  • The laptop appears to start as usual but the screen is black, if you move it, it turns on and works properly. Failed cable.
  • The laptop appears to start as usual but the screen is very dark, although it changes colour a little and you can see a very feint image. Failed inverter or cable 90%/10%.
  • Immediately after starting the screen has dark pink/red tint and turns dark after a few seconds. Failed backlight.
  • The screen flickers a few times but then turns dark, if you move it or tap it lightly on the sides, it flickers again. Failed cable or LCD 50%/50%.
  • Screen is either black or white (no picture) and external monitor works. Failed cable or LCD 30%/70%.
  • There are stripes on the screen (either vertical or horizontal) that change when you move the screen or tap it lightly on the sides. Failed cable or LCD 10%/90%.

In all above cases, if you plug in an external monitor, everything shows fine on it (you have to plug it in before starting the laptop and may need to press the “Fn” key together with one of the “F1” – “F10” keys to make the laptop recognize the external monitor).

Troubleshooting:

If the screen is black, look for the “lid closed” switch and try pushing it a few times. It’s usually a small switch near the hinges that is pressed when the lid(the screen) is closed. Sometimes these switches get stuck in the “lid closed” position that results in black screen(no backlight) or non-starting laptop. Also some laptops have a magnetic switch (newer Dells, most Macs, etc.) that doesn’t get stuck.

The most common failures are (in this order): inverter, “lid closed” switch, cable, LCD, backlight.

  1. I have a Toshiba Satellite L500 laptop computer, dropped laptop and only 2/3 of screen works perfectly from left to right the other 1/3 of the screen thin coloured lines and blank white. I assume this is a screen fault, removed screen with model number B156XW01 V2 with 30 pin connector and CCFL cable. Can this screen be repaired by installing a new CCFL lamp. or could there be other problems with this laptop.
    Do appreciate your advice.

  4. Hello. I use this site to reference LCD issues in the past but this one has me stumped.

I have a HP 6550b laptop with a black screen (no picture). The external video works just fine, so that would rule out a bad video chip on the logic board. I have since replaced the LCD screen (still black screen) and then an internal video cable (black screen again). Would it be outside the realm of maybe I just got a bad LCD/cable replacement? Or perhaps it truly is the logic board at fault?

    Thanks.

Everything on external display is 100% ok. Just internal LCD problem. Cable? Inverter? LCD? Moving with display = no change. It shows at Monday for 10 seconds, now it is permanently.

  11. #164 by muhammed yousuf . hi Muhammed i have a packard bell laptop and cracked the screen so i replaced the LCD screen. as i turned it on it showed the normal packard bell logo then went blank and has never shown a picture since although it does fade and change between black and white. i put in a new LCD cable as well thinking it was that but still no luck. it works well with an external monitor. could it be the inverter that needs to be replaced? thank you in advance for any help.

  13. I have a hp laptop and I just changed the inverter board and it works great on battery but when I plug it in after a couple seconds the screen gets light and then goes dark but if I turn down the brightness I can run on dc power?

  14. I have received a laptop from a friend that has an LCD issue. When you turn the laptop on you can see a faint image of the Windows login buttons. If you hold onto the sides of the screen and press on the lid of the laptop (while it is open) in the middle the screen brightens to full and looks fine. When you stop pressing it goes back to so dim you can hardly see anything.

I have removed the monitor and reseeded all the connections and even tried the trick with just the LCD (no case) and it didn’t work. However, when I place the screen back into the case and repeat the trick it comes on.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

  15. asus K84L modified with a i7 and Windows 7 (Intel HD 3000 Graphics). Has been working great. Seems I put it in the laptop bag while it was still on and it ran until the battery died. I plugged it in a day later and it asked to resume which I did. When it booted, the graphics were very much degraded. Almost like it was running 8 or 16 bit (which it is not, it is running 32 bit). I plugged an external monitor into it and it works perfect. Any ideas what could have happened?

  16. MD7319 Monitor. Keeping it short. Blinking blue light when monitor turned on. I can unplug the ribbon cable from M-board to LCD panel, blue light steady, CF lights works. Plug ribbon cable back in, display works properly until I turn the monitor off and turn it back on. Changed 4 470 uf, 3 220 uf, and 1 100 uf capacitors suggested from research. No change, still works with above process. Any suggestions.

  17. Hi,
I have a DELL Lattitude D520 laptop that has a dark (dead) strip (approx 1 inch) going down the right hand side of the LCD. The rest of the LCD display is fine.
When using an external monitor the display on the external monitor is fine and fully displayed.
The problem appears only on the laptop LCD display.
There does not appear to be any physical damage to the LCD screen itself.
Is this likely to be a problem with the LCD screen, inverter, cable, or anything else?
Any help would be most appreciated.
    Thanks
