Category Description Editor

This plugin was discontinued as there was little interest in it. It no longer works in newer WordPress versions. It seemed like a good idea at the time but very few people even tried it…

If you are organizing your blog by category and perhaps using the “Categories” menu for navigation, this plugin will help you make nice category descriptions that appear at the top of each category page. It enables the WordPress visual editor (TinyMCE) on the Edit Category admin page and lets you add or edit the descriptions the same way you write posts. It lets you add images, links, lists, font colours, headings, etc.

Add Category Edit Category

If your theme doesn’t display category descriptions, have a look at the WordPress codex page about the category_description template tag.

Standard WordPress quick and easy installation:

  1. Download.
  2. Unzip.
  3. Upload the “cat-description-editor” folder to the plugins directory and activate the plugin.
  4. Log in WordPress and activate the plugin.
  5. Edit any category to see the changes.

Version 1.1 supports adding and editing descriptions to both categories and tags, new in WordPress 2.8. The enhanced editor is only available on the Edit Category or Edit Tag pages. To add description to a category or tag, create it first then edit it by clicking on it’s name.

Version 1.0 supports (and requires) WordPress 2.7. The enhanced editor is only available on the Edit Category page. To add description to a category, create it first then edit it by clicking on it’s name.

  1. I was recently forced to upgrade to v2.9.2 for my company’s WP site. I think this version of WP doesn’t play well with v1.1 category description editor plugin. The pictures I insert into the categories still shows up on the admin side but when I go to the actual categories of my site, instead of a picture I just get a blank space. Help!

  2. This is getting somewhat messy – up to 2.9.1 John’s solution (call with: $category = get_the_category();
    echo $category[0]->category_description; NOT echo category_description) works for me – editor is there for category editing & formatted descriptions appear correctly
    For 2.9.2, this doesn’t work anymore. Instead if you use Ronny’s solution, the formatted description appears but category editing becomes html-only, even if you change the code in line 40 (not 42, at least on my editor).

    Confused but still needing to use this since category handling is so horrible in wp…

    Hope there will be a compatible version soon.

  3. cause html tags not allowed you have to install the “Allow HTML in Category Descriptions” plugin and activate it. than change line 42 of cat-description-editor.php from ” $init[‘theme_advanced_buttons1’] .= ‘,image’; ” to ” $init[‘theme_advanced_buttons1’] .= ‘,image,formatselect’;” after that u can use the formatselect to create headlines or whatever. tested with wp 2.9.2 and works.

  4. downloaded the new version and it doesnt work?. I get:
    Warning: call_user_func_array() []: First argumented is expected to be a valid callback, ‘wp_tiny_mce’ was given in /mnt/local/home/kevinflatt/ on line 311

  5. So any news here?

    This problem is twofold:
    For one, the changes made in the past don’t show up anymore, and secondly, the editor doesn’t show in the backend.
    It would be so cool if this would work again…

  6. I’ve been wishing this worked on 2.9.1 as well. And just now I’ve got it to finally work.
    You need to call it like this

    $category = get_the_category();
    echo $category[0]->category_description;

    echo category_description

    Im pumped mine’s working again.

  7. Hi there!
    Very cool plugin .. 2 questions.

    1 – We are using WPMU 2.91 .. any known issues?
    2 – I have many articles scheduled for Feb. They do not show up in that date dropdown. Does the plugin support scheduled posts?

    Thanks and cheers,

  8. Hi,

    the plugin is really cool – I’m using it for a while now and quite happy with it.

    Since updating to the latest WP-Version, all formatting and pictures disappeared from the cat description.

    I understand if you have no time to keep up with the WP-Updates – could you just give me a hint as to how the edited stuff is hooked back into the code-generator?
    That would be great!

    Thx a bunch for this – it makes cats look so much better!

  9. @phil there’s a “Code” button on the toolbar that would show the HTML.

    @media the JS is already loaded on the edit/write post screen. All you need to do is init another instance of TinyMCE.

    @Sam make sure the plugin is still activated. WP filters most of the tags otherwise. Or that could be your theme (if you switched it).

  10. Hi Andrew,
    Great plugin. It has been working fine for me for some time but have recently updated the site today and found that the category is description is being displayed on page without any formatting from the WYSIWYG editor.

    Any ideas what the issue may be?

    Happy New Year
