Great article! One of my friends went to get laptop repair in Calgary because their files were corrupted. This would have been good for him to know.

i have a gateway notebook with no disckdrive .i caint get on it.err mess says .system32\hal.dll file is corupt or missing .how can i get it back?

I have a missing system32\ hal.dll file and cant start the computer. It keeps coming up with the error. I tried to use the system restore disks, also the I386 file on disc and can’t. It doesn’t recognize anything in the drive.
If a get a sata to usb cable and connect the non working hard drive to a working computer will I be able to load the missing files to the computer…??
I know the hard drive is good as my daughter somehow deleted the files while using the computer.. I have the restore discs……….thanks for your help

This is a great help, though I am no techie guy and not really into technical stuffs like this. I encountered a few time with my desktop- just suddenly turning into bluescreen, but I remember I have read the UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME line. But glad, when I restart it, the pc worked again. I will definitely bookmark this post, and in case it this thing happens, I can follow and rely on this and fix it myself. Thank you for sharing this.

This helps a lot. Especially my laptop isn’t that hundred percent reliable already. Each time it wouldn’t boot that I had no idea what the heck happened, I have to spend quite a few bucks just to have the technician to check it out, crossing my fingers it wouldn’t require a reformat, and all of the files, and bookmarks, logins, etc. are lost! I hope I can follow this through once it happens (but i hope it won’t), nevertheless, I will need to call the technician again for the further mess I have done with my lappy. LOL. -Kerrie
